Echo Squad by Turbulence1973 Echo Squad by Turbulence1973
So I had this thought. In the Mass Effect universe, well before Commander Sheppard got involved, the Quarian Race had been in a 300 year war with their own creation, the Artificial Intelligent robotic Geth. I wanted to explore that a bit from the Quarian perspective so I started writing a story about a special operations squad in the Quarian defense force. Not much is known about the Marines as we've only seen the units led by Tali'zorah in Mass Effect 2. And Kal'Reegar is a bad ass.

So using a lot of the tools from the ME3 multiplayer I started creating the unit. I felt that special squads would probably be small, 4-5 people, for missions that bigger units would just be to much for. So I created Echo Squad, a four person team, seen here in this order;
1,2
3,4
Echo Squad is composed of the following members
1. Dani'Breizh Vas Yaska - Infiltrator (The Leader)
2. Myls'Stanis Vas Qwib Qwib - Soldier (The Muscle)
3. Zen'Ratha Vas Honorata - Engineer (The Sniper)
4. Uli'Narah Nar Yaska - Sentinel (The Psychic)

This is an entry for the competition "The Mass Effect OC Team Competition" for :iconthe-joeblack: found here:

Originally I went to my friend Damien :icondg-doodles: for the lines;

In my opinion he draws the best Mass Effect characters hand down. And working with all the references and specifics I gave him he was able to work out such excellent lines for the characters.

After that I went searching for a colorist. I was on a limited budget, but still wanted quality. I got lucky, because that's when Roni :iconronron84: introduced herself to me. She has an impressive gallery or art she has colored, and was eager to take on the project. God bless her, because I'm sure I was annoying as shit during the process. But she took all my instructions and changes like a champ to help me perfect everything. Without her they wouldn't look as cool. I will definitely use her services again in the future (If she'll let me :D) Please be sure to give her some love here;

Mass Effect & Quarians belongs to Bioware
Characters are all my idea though :)

Enjoy! And please remember that this is commissioned work. If you are going to re-post or reuse this anywhere please credit myself, the line artist and the colorist.
Concept: Wayne Thomason
Lines: Damien Grudnoske

I tend to think so. We only got a glimpse of the Quarian culture so I took a little bit of each class an applied it to the member of Echo Squad. I cna link you a story I'm writing about this group if you're interested.

Now that's an awesome piece of work. It's a shame there's a rumor Bioware will dump Quarians completely in ME4...

I really love the character designs. Especially the top-left one. Hood down. Always wanted to see their full helmet, plus it's a useless thing in combat. The insignas on their armors are another bonus point for you. Best quarian armor designs yet. Maybe if Bioware did a good job at MP character customization we could do something like this in-game. Now we just need to combine this with black armor and blue LED lightings. (Conclave Defense Force colors in my head).

Actually, most of the the armor designs here were taken from the various different armors seen throughout Mass Effect. Tali had so many armor options while it seemed like every other Quarian wore either a male or female standard uniform. Myls (top right) is actually almost a regular male uniform with only a few cosmetic changes. Dani's helmet (top left) is a completely new idea though. I thought there had to be other visor types why not one with a wider lens, so her lens actually bubbles up around the top of her head so she can look up more easily.
Damien took all my ideas and ran with them. His skill at drawing Quarians is unsurpassed. After that I added in the color schemes I wanted to try and I really like the way they all turned out. Roni who did the colors merged those ideas flawlessy to the suits.

I don't know about joining Echo Squad, but I might be able to put a cameo in when they get back to the migrant fleet. Send me a note with the information on your character. It's highly unlikely your character would have a sister though. Per the culture section of the Quarian page families can only have one child. masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Quar…

Well, actually she's my quarian's cousin but call him brother since his aunt and uncle took him in when his parents died of a Geth dreadnaught ambush years ago.

His Father was well known for being one of the most bravest fighters in the Fleet along with his mother who was an expert on Geth machinery and... Friends of one of the Admiralty Board that they decided to let him go under the protection of his aunt and uncle as an exception and one last favor.

I don't also see any abnormalities from their poses.
This picture tells why I trust my Quarian volunteers in my Dimensional Agency of Defence. (If you're a realist, forget my role playing talks...)

Thanks! Damien is great at drawing Quarians, you should see some of his other work. And when we started talking he was easily able to start coming up with what I wanted. I wanted something that screamed Quarian, but at the same time made each an individual. Only Tali ever got costume changes. Every other Quarian had the same exact uniform on difference was a color change. All Male had the same and all Females had the same. Tali meanwhile has an extensive wardrobe. When that was finished I went to Roni for her colors and that really fleshed them out and individualized them. Some of the color schemes I borrowed from other genres, and some were my own tastes.

Not really. I mean it's the name of both a large and major ship in the Quarian fleet. And when I named the character I had no idea others were using it. Honestly I've seen more Rayya and Neema more commonly than Qwib Qwib. Probably because they want that connection to Tali. Heck I see more 'Zorah than anything else. I'm sorry it bothers you so much.

It doesn't bother me. I just wanted to point it out. Also, anybody who's quarian has the family name of 'Zorah is BAD and should feel BAD. Isay this because in the ME universe, Quarian families in the Migrant Fleet are only allowed to have ONE child, to stay on a ground-zero level.

It was just a small fact I wanted to point out. Just like how you said most Quarians are miners, not many people knew that. Same with the One Child policy.

It's based on facts in the MEU.

Wayne may I ask why they have such long names?

Sure, it's actually that way from the Mass Effect setting. Take Dani'Breizh Vas Yaska for instance. Dani would be essentially her first name while Breizh would be her clan name/last name. Since as a race they have no planet currently they denote themselves by the ship they were born on or assigned to. 'Vas' Yaska means she is attached to the Yaska after completing her pilgrimage (kind of a coming of age process). While if you look at Uli'Narah Nar Yaska she is 'Nar' Yaska which means she was actually born on the Yaska and has not completed her Pilgrimage. They can actually stretch out the full name including both the Nar and Vas if they really want to.

Interesting. Sounds cool and they certainly look cool. One more question. Why don't you quit commissioning people to do single character commissions and get some of these bad boys on pages? Echo Squad or The Fugitives. I'm going to bed. I'll read your answer tomorrow. :)

Short answer: Money and Time.

I support single income family of five. I have to stretch every dollar like many here. Commissions are a luxury. When I tried to put up Turbulence through X-Comikz I paid for the lines myself, and even at a very reasonable $50 a page, that was $1600 for all 32 pages. and that was just lines. We aren't even talking about the price of inking, coloring, and lettering. And while I know some very affordable people here on DA I could probably hire for bottom dollar prices for max quality we are still talking several hundred to thousands to get a book done.

And while I'd like to think I'm a decent writer, writing novel style is one thing, writing comic style is another. Having to image a pane that conveys so much isn't the easiest for me. I find myself writing it out in a story first so I can see the scene, then having t double back to create a story board for it. So that's double the work. And while I'm capable of it, I don't have the financial ability to see it through to fruition unfortunately. Nor have I seen enough interest in my original ideas to support the try I guess.

Very understandable. And I had imagined that was the main reason. It is why I have not done more for my characters. I actually have more time than I let on since I am single and still living with my mom. But financially I have enough trouble paying my bills.

As you said commissions are a luxury and I think I am going to start commissioning a few people again myself. I'll just have to fit it into my budget.

Keep up the good work Wayne.
